First Membership to Shildon Railway Institute

You can now buy your first membership subscription to the world's first and oldest Railway Institute online.

Please note we limit membership applications to one per purchase - which is because we need to know the details for each individual person applying to join. Please use the details of the applicant when filling in the form to buy.

This purchase is for membership for the current calendar year and it becomes renewable at the end of December each year (unless the first application is after the 1st November each year in which case it renews at the end of December the following year).

This option is only for persons applying for membership for the first time, or if you are a lapsed member  - and consists of £5 for the annual membership plus £1 for the members's share of which you require only one and which you will retain for the duration of your membership.

Your membership gives you:

• Access to attend our Shildon Railway Institute building and to sign-in up to 2 guests.
• The ability to request to hire spaces within the Institute.
• Eligibility to attend member only events at the Institute.
• Satisfaction that you are playing your part in supporting the continuity of the first such Institute ever to have been formed in association with the railways when it was founded by the S&DR in 1833.

Shildon Railway Institute is now a Community Benefit Society (CBS) and as such, to become a member you must agree to the Rules of the Society and to abide by them. Membership is provided at the discretion of Shildon Railway Institute who reserve the right to decline your application - in which case any membership or other associated fee will be refunded to you.

Upon receipt your membership application will be processed by our team and your membership card and share certificate will be sent to you by post. There is a small administrative charge for postage and packaging. We aim to complete your application and respond to you within 14 days.

You must be 18 or over to apply for your membership online. 

When you purchase your membership we will retain your name and address for our membership register (a legal obligation on us) and your contact details - phone number and email address. We will use your email address to occasionally contact you about what's on at your Institute, your membership or to remind you of annual renewals. This is in line with our Data Privacy Policy.

We might use your contact details to contact you about your application if there is anything that we need clarifying before processing it.
